HomeBlog /The Complete Guide to Buying Stainless Steel Coil

A lot of people find it quite challenging to purchase stainless steel coils. It is to be mentioned that there are more than 60 grades of stainless steel. This is a complete guide to helping people choose the best stainless steel coil. Let us start.

    Different Factors You Need Consider

    1. Corrosion resistance

This topic of corrosion resistance is extremely important to know when purchasing stainless steel products. The standard grade most commonly used for food grade applications is AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL. Due to its chemistry, austenitic stainless steels show tremendous resistance to basic corrosive environments containing only salt and water. Specifically, our 304 – grades (including but not limited to), include 18/22, 20/30, 15/25, and 10/15. Use the proper grade based on your installation environs; atmospheric conditions such as air quality, moisture content, and acidity levels can greatly increase the corrosion rate of a product.

    2. Resistance to heat

Many More customers choose stainless steel coils because they can use them everywhere without any concern about the corrosion. Temperature is a factor to consider when purchasing stainless steel products. High temperatures, such as in a furnace environment of (900 – 1175C) can increase the corrosion of stainless steel products. Moreover, high temperature exerts high pressure on the products. So you will have to purchase heat-resistant stainless steel, such as 253MA and 321MA if the temperature is always high.

    3. Cryogenic resistance

Austenitic stainless steel is more efficient at low temperatures. They can maintain a higher tensile strength at low temperatures compared to ambient temperatures. Regardless of degrading and toughness, such steel is suitable for low temperatures. Cryogenic resistance means that the materials ability to withstand decreased material temperature after exposure to increasing pressures. You must check cryogenic resistance to know which one is better for you.

    4. Magnetic response

Austenitic and ferritic grades of stainless steel typically have a lower magnetic content, whereas chromium-based grades are more magnetically active. You must check the magnetic response for each type of grade; austenitic is not as strong as carbonitride and 310, 316, and 430 grade steels so these all tend to show very little effect. Martensitic Stainless with higher magnetic content such as 310, 320, 330, 410, and 416 , which are not magnetic but can be made into hardware that is by using posthardening processes such as nitriding, has deep cryogenic Tempering to achieve those characteristics. Duplex grades like 2205 and 2201 are ferromagnetic while others like 400CN and 452CBM are paramagnetic.

    5. Cost

Cost is one of the most important factors when buying stainless steel coil. Stainless steel of high price can be worth the money as it can run for a longer time. So you need to access the costs depending upon the basis of the life cycle. Different 201 stainless steel coil sell the products at different costs.

    6. Strength required

It can be quite complex to know the steel strength that you require. The strength requirement depends upon the installation environment and the purpose of installation. In some cases, high-strength duplex and austenitic stainless steel are suitable. But in some cases, these can be the most unsuitable as they cannot meet your requirements. So you must check the strength that is required for your work.

    7. Common manufacturers

The stainless steel coils are available from a number of manufacturers in the world. Foshan Poscc Steel Co.,Ltd is a professional manufacturer with more than 20 years of experience in manufacturing stainless steel, carbon steel, and galvanized steel established in 2001. Different Types You Need Consider

    301 stainless steel

With high ductile, 301 steel is most used for molding products. It can harden rapidly during machining. As to the abrasive resistance and fatigue strength, 301 steel is better than 304 steel.

    302 stainless steel

Its corrosion resistance is the same as 304, but the strength is slightly higher due to the addition of carbon.

    303 stainless steel

By adding the elements of sulfur and phosphorus, 303 stainless steel is easier to process when compared to 304 steel.  ISO 3506 named it “A1”

    304 stainless steel

304 stainless steel is the most common 18/8 stainless steel. It has also known name “A2” by ISO3506.

    316 stainless steel

316/316L sheet possesses excellent mechanical properties at sub-zero temperatures and good corrosion resistance making it a great choice for marine applications.

316/316L stainless steel coil and sheet have excellent corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength, can be used under harsh conditions, good work hardening, and non-magnetic. Suitable for seawater equipment, chemical, dye, paper, oxalic acid, fertilizer production equipment, photography, food industry, and coastal facilities.

    Type 316 Stainless Steel Properties

An austenitic chromium-nickel molybdenum stainless and heat-resisting steel, Type 316 has excellent corrosion resistance, particularly against pitting versus other chromium-nickel steels, especially when exposed to different chemicals. These corrodents consist of brine solutions, seawater, and similar salts and acids. This alloy deep draws well and is easily welded, although carbide precipitation may occur when slowly cooled through the temperature range of 800°-1650°F. High strength and the resistance to creep at elevated temperatures characterize type 316. 316/316L to ASTM-666 stainless steel strips are molybdenum-bearing stainless steels possessing a greatly increased resistance to chemical attack as compared to that of the basic chromium-nickel analysis. In addition, Type 316 also offers higher creep, stress-to-rupture, and tensile strengths at elevated temperatures than any other stainless steel.

Popular Grades of Stainless Steel Coil

    1. Grade 304 / 1.4301. A consistently popular grade choice due to its marked resistance to corrosion and exceptional weldability, grade 304 stainless steel coil is noted for its ability to be easily shaped or roll formed. Type 304 is widely used in household items (1 and 2 tableware), cabinets, indoor pipelines, water heaters, boilers, bathtubs, auto parts, medical appliances, building materials, chemicals, the food industry, agriculture, and ship parts.
    2. Grade 316 / 1.4404. Where even greater corrosion resistance is required, such as in the marine environment, 316 is the preferred choice. This grade is especially resistant to pitting corrosion thanks to the addition of the element molybdenum.
    3. Grade 321 / 1.4541. A variant of 304, this grade has added titanium to make it stronger. Grade 321 stainless steel strip displays excellent welding characteristics and is particularly resistant to the damaging effects of intergranular corrosion. Common Applications of 321:useful in the chromium carbide precipitation range (800-1500°F, 427-815°C), aircraft exhaust stacks, manifolds, chemical processing equipment, welded equipment, jet engine parts, heat Exchangers, expansion joints.
    4. Grade 430 / 1.4016. Primarily used in catering and other domestic industries, grade 430 is a ferritic alloy designed to deliver good resistance to corrosion.

Popular Finish Options of Stainless Steel Coil

A comprehensive collection of finishes is also available from POSCC STEEL when purchasing stainless steel coil. Popular finish options include:

      1. 2D. Also cold-rolled, the 2D finish has a matte surface with low reflectivity.
      2. HR / No.1 . This hot-rolled finish has a scaled appearance and so is ideal where the final aesthetic is not an important concern.
      3. BA / 2R. Cold rolled and annealed in a controlled atmosphere to retain a highly reflective finish. This highly-reflective finish is achieved by annealing the alloy in a carefully controlled atmosphere.
      4. 2B. Smooth finish, reflective grey sheen. Most widely used surface finish. The most popular surface finish, 2B offers a smooth appearance with a grey, reflective sheen.
